BEST 18th C Antique Wrought Iron Colonial Era Folk art Scotch Broiler AAFA Picture(s) and Description:

12" H x 11 3/8" W A Great 18th C Antique Wrought Iron Scotch BroilerA truly superb example of early wrought iron hearthware. This example is exquisite in form and design and dates from the mid to late 18th century, circa 1750-1780.Though this design is commonly referred to as a “Scottish Broiler” the form in fact was used through out what is now the United Kingdom, with many arriving in American during the period of colonization. The form is referenced in numerous volumes on period wrought iron, see “The Sorber Collection” by Don Plummer for an almost identical example. Also, Wallace Nutting had referenced broilers of a similar nature in his "Furniture Treasury". A broiler such as this was used at the foot of an open hearth fireplace. A cut of meat, or a fowl would have been placed on the face of the broiler. The back standing leg would have allowed the piece to angle against the flames of the heat and allow for direct cooking. As you can see, this example carries a wonderful center decoration that would not only function as a support but also absorb the radiant heat and allow for a more uniform cooking platform. In addition to broiling various meats, the piece would also have served for toasting slices of bread. The construction of the broiler is of the finest quality. The blacksmith who produced the piece took careful effort to forge not only an effective cooking tool but a truly exquisite example of the craft of period metalworking. Please take a moment to click on the enlargement and zoom functions of the images to take a closer look at the quality and condition of this early broiler. Offered for a period of one week with no reserve and a low starting bid, this is certain to be a focal point of any iron or hearthware collection.
